A weathered stone threshold between a sunlit meadow and a shadowed forest, captured in photographic realism. The foreground shows fine cracks and lichen on the flat stones, dew beading along mossy edges. Beyond, a soft-focus path disappears into tall, dark pines, while behind the viewer the grass glows a luminous green under late-afternoon golden hour light. Mist gathers low to the ground, catching thin shafts of light that seem to pour through an invisible veil. Shot at eye level with a shallow depth of field, the stones in crisp focus and the forest gently blurred, creating a serene, contemplative mood that suggests crossing into a thin place between worlds.

About

Thin Places, Sacred Spaces

Thin Places Journal gathers and shares new, high-quality writing on thin places and sacred spaces, inviting reflection on place, memory, and spiritual thresholds.

Work may engage with geographical place, architectural spaces, or other interpretations of a thin place. Some of our monthly journal editions will have a more specific theme, others will include a range of literary takes on the subject.

The first issue of Thin Places will be published online in May 2026.

Thin Places is founded by Sarah Law, poet, tutor, and editor of our ‘older sister’ journal, Amethyst Review.

The interior of a small, stone-built oratory on a remote island, interpreted in sophisticated photographic realism. Rough, hand-laid stones form thick walls, their irregular surfaces catching the faint light from a narrow, arched window. A simple, unadorned stone slab stands in the center, its surface smooth with centuries of touch. Through the window, only a strip of gray sea and low sky are visible, softened by sea mist and slightly out of focus. The lighting is dim and directional, creating gentle pools of light and deep, velvety shadows in the corners. Shot from a slightly elevated angle with sharp focus on the central slab, the space feels intimate, hushed, and quietly sacred, embodying a timeless thin place.
An isolated stone doorway standing alone in a wild moor, with no walls attached, rendered in refined photographic realism. The weathered stones are flecked with orange lichen, each chiseled edge and rough surface sharply defined. Through the doorway, the landscape subtly shifts: the sky appears a shade brighter, distant hills softened by pearlescent mist, heather blooming more vibrantly. Outside the frame, the moor is under brooding, overcast light; within the doorway’s rectangle, a gentle, diffused glow suggests a different atmosphere. Shot straight-on with a centered composition and moderate depth of field, the image emphasizes the doorway as a literal and symbolic threshold, creating a contemplative, otherworldly mood.

An ancient coastal cliff edge where rugged land meets vast sea, rendered in sophisticated photographic realism. In the foreground, coarse heather and wind-twisted grasses cling to dark, stratified rock, their textures sharply detailed. Far below, waves churn in silvery-blue patterns, softened by sea mist that rises like a veil. The horizon is obscured by a pale, diffused overcast sky, flattening the light and deepening muted greens, grays, and blues. Shot from a slightly elevated angle, the frame leads the eye along the cliff’s edge toward a distant, fog-shrouded headland. The mood is austere and sacred, with quiet drama and a sense of ancient presence lingering in the salt-laden air.
